You Didn’t Miss Summer: Finding Joy in the Ordinary Days

Somehow, it’s August.
And if you’re anything like me, the arrival of August can bring with it a strange sense of urgency.
Wait… did we do enough?
Did we go to the pool enough? Take enough trips? Stay up late enough? Get enough ice cream? Make enough memories?
Did we actually have a good summer?
I’ve found myself thinking about this lately because Oak’s social media has been pretty quiet this summer. Work has still been happening behind the scenes, of course, but posting regularly was one of the things I intentionally let fall to the bottom of the list.
Partly because life was busy.
And partly because I wanted to actually do summer.
But then August arrived, and even I caught myself wondering whether we had somehow done enough with it.
The Pressure to Make Summer Magical
There’s something about summer—especially when you have kids—that can make ordinary life feel like it isn’t quite enough.
Summer comes with bucket lists. Vacations. Camps. Beach trips. Concerts. Water parks. Weekend getaways. Pinterest-worthy backyard activities.
And none of those things are bad. They can be wonderful.
But somewhere along the way, it can start to feel like we’re responsible for creating three straight months of childhood magic.
Meanwhile, most of us still have jobs.
There are still appointments and grocery shopping and laundry. Kids still argue. Parents still get tired. It rains on the day you planned to go to the pool. Someone inevitably complains about the activity everyone was supposedly going to love.
Real life doesn’t stop just because school does.
And maybe it isn’t supposed to.
Summer Doesn’t Have to Be Big to Be Good
When we think about making memories, we tend to think about the big things.
The vacation.
The day at the amusement park.
The perfectly planned family outing.
But so much of what makes a season meaningful happens in moments that would never make it onto a summer bucket list.
It’s eating popsicles on the front steps.
The song that somehow becomes the song of the summer because you’ve heard it 400 times in the car.
Wet bathing suits hanging over every available surface.
Staying outside a little later because nobody has to wake up quite as early tomorrow.
Getting ice cream after dinner for no particular reason.
Kids wandering around the house saying they’re bored.
A last-minute text that turns into an unexpectedly great night.
Laughing about something completely ridiculous.
Those moments can feel incredibly ordinary while they’re happening.
And that’s exactly the point.
You Didn’t Miss It
If August has arrived and you’re suddenly feeling pressure to squeeze everything you possibly can into the remaining weeks of summer, consider this your permission to stop.
You don’t have to make up for anything.
You didn’t miss summer because you had to work.
You didn’t miss it because you didn’t take a big vacation.
You didn’t miss it because some weekends were spent doing absolutely nothing exciting.
You didn’t miss it because your kids had more screen time than you planned, everyone got on each other’s nerves sometimes, or you never got around to half the things you thought you would do back in June.
Summer was happening in the middle of all of it.
The joy was there, too.
In the chaos.
In the smallness.
In the completely ordinary days you may not even realize your kids will remember.
There’s Still Summer Left
So maybe we don’t need to spend August frantically trying to finish summer.
Maybe we can just enjoy what’s left of it.
Take the ice cream trip if you feel like it.
Stay outside a little later.
Let the kids be bored.
Make the last-minute plan—or say no to it.
Order pizza and watch a movie.
Let an ordinary Tuesday just be an ordinary Tuesday.
There is no requirement that summer be the best summer ever.
It just gets to be yours.
